Review of Candyman (1992) by Megan — 04 Nov 2009
Back in the day, this was one of the creepiest movies I had ever seen. The idea of a Bloody Mary-like supernatural entity with a hook for a hand that shows up when you call upon him in the mirror and kills you, is a great idea for a horror movie, and it was grounds for some pretty creepy scenes and ideas in the movie. Of course Tony Todd is pretty much the sole reason the idea worked as well as it did. He not only looked creepy but his voice is perfect for the role. The creepy musical score helped add to the atmosphere as well. If nothing else, this movie had a great villain and a great score. While there wasn't a whole lot of gore overall, there were one or two scenes with enough blood to make gorehounds happy, and the ending was nothing short of amazing and bittersweet.
However the movie is nowhere near as good as I remember. Apart from Tony Todd, all the acting was borderline horrible, the edits and cuts in the movie were extremely amateur and on the verge of being annoyingly bad, and the movie is veeerrrrryyyyy slow. Way slower then I remember it being, with many scenes running on way longer then they should have.
In the end I still enjoyed it quite alot, but it was nowhere near as good as I remember it being and the faults were much more obvious to me this time around then when I was younger.
