Review of Candyman (1992) by Andrew D — 30 Oct 2010

This movie is scary... period. the only movies that scare me are the ones that depict a normal going life that suddenly comes crashing down and you cant do anything about it because how in the world can you kill the boogy man.

Plus the film borderlined on being a realistic horror and urban legend horror from start to finish which made it very good.

As the film progresses, the storyline progresses with making the viewer feel that the protagonist should stop where she is and not go further. This can also relate to us as we the audience hardly believe in urban legends or a silly ghost story we know and wont think that they are even scary at all. Whether if it is a ghost story or not, if one becomes obsessed with it it can end up becoming all too real in that person's perspective. The ghost story itself is not scary but the curiosity of it being real (even though if it isnt) is what helps the story become scary.

This development is due to I believe a good script and how the director is able to define the protagonist's character in order for us to feel for her especially in the later half of the film.

Freddy is funny, but candyman takes his stuff serious. Tony Todd is in top form. Even his voice screams scary.

Hollywood needs to look at this film and make Drama-Horror films again. Here the film evokes the feeling of disturbing horror through its music, atmosphere, good direction, good urban legend type story, and the hopelessness that a movie creates for its main character.

I maybe the only one to say this but even though the ending was really freaky enough, the scene while the credits are rolling always leaves me unsettled for some reason. the scene that produced that feeling in me is, to me, the haunting effect of horror that hardly happens anymore. freakin good movie!
