Review of Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) by Andrew O — 19 Nov 2018
First let me say, I'm not sorry to have seen it, and I really love Melissa McCarthy's performance. But 98% fresh? I have to disagree.
The story as told here is as predictable as the alphabet. A leads to B leads to C blah blah blah Z. No risks are taken. And once you've secured an actress as talented as Ms. McCarthy you could run wild with it, she keeps a flatly drawn character three dimensional.
I haven't read Ms. Israel's novelization of these events, but if it is half as dry as this movie then perhaps copy writing was a better place for her.
