Review of Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) by Jon P — 29 Oct 2018
I saw the movie last night. First of all, some of the reviewers have indicated that this is NOT a great movie but Melissa McCarthy's performance is. Given that Ms. McCarthy is in almost every frame of the movie, it's unconscionable to think that you can divorce one from the other.
The story was compelling and full of compassion and everyone's work was extraordinarily rich. I wish that professional reviewers could just once review a film like a human being and not find the need to find something to criticize simply to justify their being hired.
There was nothing wrong with this film, it should win many awards. I ended up loving McCarthy/Israel in spite of the fact that she was a reprehensible person, very flawed, and addictively repelled real connections at every turn of her journey.
It is a brilliant creative team that can stir love for a character like that, to the point of tearing up as they are shoveling cat shit from under her bed. I am grateful that I am a person that can absolutely allow myself to escape into a movie without the need to get out a notebook and poop pretentiousness all over the world.
Y'all should try it.
