Review of Camp Nowhere (1994) by Lauren B — 20 Jun 2007
At one point, I could recite this movie line-for-line until about the three-quarter mark--and with good reason. It has all the elements necessary to make it a middle school hit: teen idols, cliques broken down and reconfigured, an energetic soundtrack, the playing out of children's fantasies, and a good number of nudity jokes.
It's _Breakfast Club_ without the requirements, _Lord of the Flies_ without the death. Yes, it's silly. Yes, several of the actors are so bad you wonder how they ever made it to the auditions in the first place--then you realize, "Oh, yeah--s/he's 'cute.
'" Yes, that's Christopher Lloyd playing, well, every other character he's ever played. And yes, that's a young Jessica Alba. But it's fun, it's light, and it teaches the ever-important lesson that "just because you're smart, doesn't mean you can't act stupid.
".
