Review of Calvary (2014) by Tom D — 22 Apr 2014
Despite the ominous setup, Calvary is more than just a brooding film about mortality. The script is sharp and witty, and there are moments of charm and a few surprises. A dark humour permeates the film, even as cracks widen in the apparently idyllic community, revealing the prejudices within.
Brendan Gleeson is captivating, and his performance carries the film and prevents it from feeling too stagey.
