Don't look for 'realism' in this movie look for allegory, myth, and the inferno. Then look for suffering, sorrow and the cost of virtue. And therein is the movies difficulty, there is a lot of cultural backstory for some who just won't get it.
But for those who have the backstory it's a film of wonders.
