Review of Calvary (2014) by Samuel J — 15 Aug 2014
I want to like ethnic movies such as this but much like the "The Grand Seduction" before it, these movies set on islands like Newfoundland or Ireland just drag on and on. And they're rather depressing too. As soon as we realize from the opening scene that the protagonist has a due date, his imminent death just hangs over the entire movie like a dark cloud.
So he spends his entire week un-living everything he is supposed to stand for as part of the priesthood because he's inconveniently faced with the reality of death?
Then cue the dramatic music and him praying before the cross to symbolize the rough week he's had abandoning his principles and living an un-priestly life is somehow spiritual?
Then the hammer, "forgiveness is underrated.".
I don't know, maybe the movie went right over my head. I don't know if I can sit through another viewing to give it a second chance.
