Review of Calvary (2014) by Jonathan B — 28 Aug 2014
An excellent sophomore feature from writer-director John Michael McDonagh, Calvary is a powerful examination on the topics of faith, redemption, sin and if it's possible to individually atone for the corruptibility of religious institutions.
It's much more of a serious and darker drama than The Guard, however there still is a little of that type of humor sprinkled in, while Brendan Gleeson delivers another dynamite outing with one of the year's most heartfelt performances.
The McDonagh brothers continue to have some of the most interesting voices in film, and their ability to both challenge and entertain is currently matched by few.
