Review of Calvary (2014) by Sandy B — 29 Aug 2014
If you are in the mood for a call to a suicide hotline when you're done, then by all means go see "Calvary". I find it interesting to see how many people found it humorous. I think these people were far too tragic to be funny.
And easch one is more tragic the the other. It's death at every turn...suicde, death of romance, death of self...and finally a brutal death based on the fact that the priest was a good guy and therefore needed to die (To save others.
) Thus "Calvary. It was simply too dark for me to enjoy. The same goes for my friend who was with me. The photography is impressive and sets the scene for the isolation...especially as rocky highlands are set against a background of lush greenery.
I suppose the performances are good. Once I sunk into the darkness, I no longer cared about performance. I compare my reaction to Calvary to Melancholia. Just not my cup of tea (even though I do like dense and dark moveies/films).
