Review of Calvary (2014) by Michael O — 14 Sep 2014
Brendan Gleeson keeps this from being over pretentious with another excellent performance as an honest, likeable but troubled priest. After receiving some rather disturbing news that he is on the list of a local killer at a confession we then follow father James' as he continues to go about his business one week leading up to when the incident may take place.
John McDonagh's second major film after the brilliant and hilarious The Guard is oh so well made but I couldn't help feeling rather let down and frankly quite bored by the time the end credits rolled! It does try so hard to be touching but feels rather empty and is no where near as enjoyable as McDonagh's first feature.
Hopefully he gets his sense of humour and sense of excitement back for his next feature. Overall it has it's moments and very good performances by the cast but is certainly not the best Irish film to date!
