Review of Calvary (2014) by Nathan S — 24 Jan 2015
Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self esteem - be sure that you are not first, in fact, surrounded by a-holes. - William Gibson.
Overall - I found this film to be overly simplistic and simple minded. The past crimes and scandals of the Catholic Church are mentioned but are used to push forth the plot line and are not handled in a serious manner. The plot line seems to be, a town in Ireland is inhabited by people with an extraordinary number of mental issues and they all want to break as many of the seven deadly sins as possible while thumbing their nose at the church. Every single townsfolk seems to be determined to rub their sins in the face of an easy going and kind hearted priest played by Brendan Gleeson.
On the plus side - all of the actors did a fantastic job and Mr. Gleeson showed that he can play a serious character as well as the "funny man." The film direction and scenery are first rate and was one of the few areas of the film I enjoyed.
I enjoy dark humor and found "The Guard" hilarious, but I couldn't find the humor in this absolute mess of a story. Not to mention there are a couple of loose ends that remain unresolved at the end of the film.
