Review of Calvary (2014) by Brad H — 15 Oct 2015
The story traces a week in the life of a priest in a small Irish town after someone in the anonymity of the confession booth threatens to kill the priest - a good man - for the sexual abuse the anonymous man suffered as a child at the hands of another priest.
As the priest awaits the date of his promised murder (unsure whether the threat is real), he feels increasingly off-balance by overt signs of hostility among his parishioners - and even from strangers - towards him as a representative of a church that has lost their trust.
Through it all he continues ministering to troubled members of his flock and also trying to comfort an adult daughter (he was married and widowed before become a priest) who is recovering from a suicide attempt.
He is a fascinating blend of spiritual strength, wisdom, good humor, and human vulnerability. Woven through a powerful story of morality is a perfect blend of wit and dark humor. The ending packs a huge emotional punch, demonstrating the power of forgiveness and grace.
