Review of Calvaire (2005) by Phil N — 13 Jul 2008
Calvaire is quite an 'ordeal' to sit through, it certainly isn't going to appeal to your casual viewer! A cabaret singer gets stranded in a remote village and is taken in by the local inn keeper.
Sadly he thinks his guest is his ex-wife... and the rest of the villagers are no more sane. Imagine a Belgian version of The League Of Gentlemen without the laughs... actually, that's not strictly true because Calvaire is very funny.
Albeit a very, very dark and disturbing kind of funny, but you just can't help yourself. I can't wait to see what Fabrice Du Welz does with Vinyan...
