Review of Calvaire (2005) by Mario T — 13 Sep 2009
There is a certain familiarity with the French new wave of horror here: Calvaire definitely has the essentials of a good horror film, such as interesting premise promising psychological realism, a milieu Tarkovsky would be proud of, and technical competence particularly in the field of cinematography.
But the filmmakers cannot capitalise on the film's potential, and Calvaire succumbs into a banal mess, the Jesus parallels being a sad example of the film's typical misguided and plain dumb idiosyncrasies.
