Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Luis B — 15 Dec 2017
How can I call this my favorite movie of 2017 without seeing it?!?!?! I have read the intriguingly heartbreaking novel, bought the soundtrack and have seen so many interviews and film clips..... I cannot be rash. I am drawn equally to the story and being a fan of Armie Hammer. I have also been fortunate to have experience the sexual/sensual awakening that Oliver and Elio share. I also have had a summer romance in Firenze (Florence) similar to what happens in the film.
The chemistry between Armie and Timothy seems so authentic. It is further validated by the time they spent together during non-filming hours.
A consensual passion between an older twenty-something and a teen will probably be misunderstood in America especially during these times when so many cases of sexual abuse has come center stage.
However, I have been clear that just as Elio seduced Oliver, by no means was I ever abused or forced. That is my one concern. Unlike the shame and pain displayed in the beautifully melancholy "Brokeback Mountain", I hope this will be a validation of the delicacy of summer love embodied in sexual awakening.
