Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Rich C — 03 Jan 2018
Wow! To say I was blown away by this movie would be an understatement. It's really more of an experience than a film. It perfectly immerses you as a teen in a Northern Italian summer in 1983 (I lived there as a teenager until the summer of 82 and can vouch for the authenticity of everything from the cars, to the graphic novels, to the political posters) and the universality of a first love with its ultimate consequences.
The actors were absolutely amazing! There's a monologue delivered by Elio's father that really redefines a modern ideal of fatherhood (and had literally everyone in the audience tearing up). While I wouldn't want to watch a couple of scenes sitting next to my Mom (hmm.
.. think Peaches & Cream), it's pretty tame from the sex scene side and you'd have to be fairly homophobic to be offended. Oh, and don't be a dickhead and leave during the credits or you'll miss/interrupt what should be an Oscar clinching performance for Timothee Chalamet.
Fucking Brilliant!
