Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Ricky D — 19 Jan 2018
I get it. Northern Italy is gorgeous. Being wealthy with lots of free time is desirable. Pretty people are easy on the eyes. While all of these things understandably make this film more attractive to its audience, Call Me By Your Name is in no way the masterpiece so many people are claiming it to be.
A lot of the qualities that critics have attached to this film are in fact absent from it. A lot of these generous adjectives are observations of what the director was trying to achieve, rather than what he actually did achieve.
As much as critics have attempted to write the earnestness into existence, this film has a certain emptiness from start to finish.
