Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Korben D — 18 Feb 2018
It's cute, it's sweet, but forgettable. The story is a bit bumpy and from time to time it's just a wild guess. The acting skills of Timothee Chalamet is Oscar-worthy, but the film itself skates on thin ice.
Of course the writer chose to set the story during the 80ies, so the easiness of social media wouldn't interfere with the theme of the movie: crying about the fear of losing someone you love. With that being sad it feels like the movie itself is stuck in that whole time genre, basically it's a movie which could have been made 20 years ago.
Nothing new, nothing refreshing, especially for this era where being gay is more accepted overall. Strangely enough I would prefer Brokeback Mountain above this film, although I thought that film was too much Oscar-focused finding a way to introduce the theme to a bigger audience.
This is 2018, let's just make movies where being gay is integrated and we don't make a big deal about it anymore? How about a superhero movie where the main character is a black gay man? But then of a better quality than 'Black Panther' of course.
Anyway, I watched the whole movie, I did not walk out of the cinema and that's a good sign. @Korben_Dallas on Twitter.
