Review of Call Me by Your Name (2017) by Rebecca P — 03 Mar 2018
Call Me By Your Name is a low budget indie film that proves to be one of the better films of 2017. The film takes place in a small northern Italian town in 1983. Armie Hammer's Oliver arrives from the U.
S. as an assistant for the summer for Elio Perlman's (Timothee Chalamet) father. Both begin to grow feelings for one another and the film explores this relationship, both physically and emotionally for the rest of its run time.
The film can move at a slow pace from time to time, but this is because the movie spends great lengths of time building the relationship between the two protagonists. Both actors put in strong performances and are proving to be two of Hollywood's bright young actors.
The cinematography is also amazing, as it captures the beauty of 1980's Italy perfectly. This also drives the film, as many of the locations and shots add to the story and relationship between Elio and Oliver.
The film has many modern connections, which is part of its popularity and award buzz. This is also another drawback to the film, as there are many scenes clearly looking for Oscar buzz. Overall, though Call Me By Your Name is a good movie with gorgeous cinematography and solid performances by its two leads, while also providing a story that connects well to modern society.
