Review of Caligula (1979) by Alex S — 21 Oct 2007
I know it's smut, it's totally melodramatic, totally over-the-top, it's quite ridiculous, but I thought it was really fun to watch. I know that there was a big power struggle between Tinto Brass and Gore Vidal about how it should be presented.
Vidal wanted it to be a solemn biopic and Brass wanted it to be an epic of comic proportions. Then you have Bob Guccione trying to put in as much additional porno as he could. In the end, when these things are considered, it's pretty funny when you watch it.
I've seen the R-rated version as well, which is cut up so much with no continuity, it's not worth watching. In the end, the movie is a disaster and really stupid, but I still like it for just those reasons.
