Review of Calcutta (1969) by Adam S — 20 Dec 2010
Edited together after the realization that there wasn't enough room in the epic 'Phantom India' series for all of the 'Calcutta' footage he wanted to use, Malle's 'Calcutta' is a stand-alone piece of artistic documentary.
Malle's camera lingers on street performers and slum kids, while his voiceover damns the caste system that propagates the city's vile poverty. A brilliant portrait of humanity, refusing to give up.
