Review of Cake (2014) by Giselle B — 25 Jan 2015
I saw Patrick Tobin and Daniel Barnz' "Cake" starring Jennifer Anniston and Anna Kendrick yesterday and it was beautiful.
A victim of poor reviews on the basis of its "angsty" nature, I just want to approach every critic who said this and give them a run down of how mental illness often doesn't have happy resolutions in and hour and a half.
Sometimes when things are going great, terrible things ruin them, small triggers have big consequences. To be in the audience and say that having this happen annoys you is nothing compared to the idea of being in the situations of people who have to live through that.
"Cake" is an honest, unromanticized, and frustrating look at pain and suffering.
If these critics wanted a man to swoop down and cure Jennifer Anniston of her mental illness with the power of love, if these critics didn't like that her character was unpleasant, and if these critics didn't like the pervasive nature of her suicidal thoughts, rather than saying the film was annoying--and therefore saying mental illness and those suffering are annoying for not just "getting over it", these critics need to get some empathy and compassion and stop contributing to stigmatization.
Be kind and love.
