Review of Cake (2014) by Patter W — 01 Jan 2015
This is getting a push for awards. How political. I'm still scratching my head. Aniston's portrayal of the character is one angry note and displays an insufficient empathy which clearly show her limits.
After 40 minutes one could care less about her "I'm mad at the world routine" an annoying constant as is 45% of the movie is her taking pills (played out after the 16th time), another pain face and the "painful laying down in the car" scenes.
The crisp camera work, palette and editing offset these limits. Her delightful maid (Adriana Barraza) steals every scene they're in due to her chops, 3D character and genuine empathy. This is not a "dark comedy" as hyped, it's a painful depressed drama.
Aniston is a pleasant personality who became very famous for a hit TV show - why she's still famous proves she simply won the fame lottery.
