Review of Cake (2014) by Alberto A — 05 Mar 2015
Cake is actually more interesting than expected. Of course, trashed by more than half of the critics, but they all agreed on something: that Jennifer Anistonâ??s performance is worth talking about. In Cake she definitely succeeded in making me forget Rachel Green, and all the derivative roles after Friends. She gave a poignant insight into a woman struggling with chronic pain and grief who becomes fascinated by a young woman from her support group who committed suicide, to the point that I was actually feeling leg chills. Maybe Anistonâ??s character Claire was looking up to that unfortunate soul and thatâ??s why she sees her as some sort of role model, which is quite polemic if you think about it in this way. There are definitely interesting things about this storyline!
However, this film does use almost no creativity and a bunch of fillers to create plot points, which makes it a little bit cliché and slow-paced. Some scenes felt forced as if they were written to serve a plot purpose later on (which of course is how some scripts work but it should not be done so blatantly). I wish this movie had more depth and intimacy in it because Anistonâ??s performance would have really stood out more. Some scenes are just irrelevant and unnecessary, like the gardener scene and some of Silvanaâ??s scenes. But Iâ??ll give this to Cake, it has a very interesting characters, especially Claire. I would recommend this film because it is definitely an impact watching Jennifer Aniston star in somewhere that is worth talking about, and she did great actually.
