Review of Cake (2014) by Orlando O — 20 May 2015
Cake has layers and for this drama film about chronic pain and suffering, it goes through those layers along with the clichés and an incoherent direction. The movie has a weak script that barely knows what it wants to do with the story. Yes, the only highlight of the movie is, Jennifer Aniston's outstanding performance of her career.
Claire (Jennifer Aniston) suffers from chronic pain after a tragic car accident left her physically and emotionally damaged when she lost her son. She attends a chronic pain support group. One of the members of the group Nina (Anna Kendrick) commits suicide. Claire struggles with hallucinations of seeing Nina taunting her, and her struggle from her severe pain.
The movie has its cringe moments and its raw elements of a person suffering. The movie does lack any character depths and there was no development at all. Also, the subplot of Claire's house maid waiting outside her house after her work is over, waiting for Claire's boy toy of a gardener to leave as she gives him a box of toys. Her housemaid goes after him to take the box of toys and stash it in her own closet. The sub plot was never answered.
Cake gives a noticeable performance for Jennifer Aniston, the film suffers from incoherent direction, a loose script, and the movie does not have any depth to the characters.
