Review of Cairo Time (2009) by Jeff J — 23 Jun 2011
A measured, character-driven film that explores human connections. Patricia Clarkson gives a richly nuanced performance as an American woman who experiences a series of disappointments when she arrives in Cairo to visit her husband, yet shrugs them off as best she can with good grace as her friendship with an Eygptian man (played brilliantly by Alexander Siddig) grows into something special.
Their mutal politeness, intellect, good humor and warmth allow them to openly address cultural differences, yet those differences remain as unspoken barriers. I especially loved the way the writer/director allowed silences to speak volumes.
