Review of Cairo Time (2009) by Jiana W — 14 Jun 2011
Not much happened in this but the locale is beautiful. It was interesting and rare to see a film set in Cairo, Egypt. Patricia Clarkson, whom I know best from "Easy A", plays a woman coming to Cairo for a vacation with her husband, Mark. Mark, who is a U.N. worker, is tied up in Gaza and thus can not come, and isn't sure when he will be able to. Enter Tareq, a local and a friend of Mark's, who more or less keeps an eye on Juliette and looks out for her in this new place. Juliette, a little lonely and sad at her husband's absence, sticks close to Tareq. They form a bond and eventually an unspoken attraction. They're quietly flirtatious, hanging out and seeing the beautiful sights together. It's obvious they're attracted to each other but it's not overdone and I liked that it didn't become more. Mark was ugly compared to Tareq but I've had enough of movies where bored spouses have extra-marital flings with others as if there's nothing wrong with it.
Other than certain aspects, though, the movie's pretty pensive and quiet. Nothing to really write home about.
