Review of Café Society (2016) by Richard P — 30 Jul 2016
A very solid woody Allen movie with really interesting characters and a fun story set in intriguing time (Hollywood and NY in the late 30's. It's the second Woody Allen movie I've seen that he wrote as a vehicle for his younger self in the lead but in Cafe Society we only hear Allen as the narrator - I wonder if the intention is that the older Allen is telling the story to us.
The other film written with a lead that seems written for Allen to start was midnight in Paris where Owen Wilson's character had the voice of woody but it was subtle and took a while for me to draw the connection.
The difference here is that Jessie Eisenberg went so far as to make his performance an imitation of woody Allen. It was a little distracting at times but I was intrigued at the idea of this character he created and played in so many films living on after his death and becoming part of the ongoing toolkit of the medium.
