Review of Café Society (2016) by Frank-Raymond P — 06 Jan 2018
Not one of his best. The problem is that many of his films rehash the same themes (neurotic personalities, infidelity, people who have issues committing and easily run off with something more shiny and pretty) etc.
Here, those same issues take center stage and nothing else about it really sticks out. Kristen Stewart gives a good performance but her character is relegated to the same indecisive female stereotype we've seen before.
Some of his earlier films were fantastic in their portrayals of the complexities of romantic relationships, but these days he simply redoes the same old love stories we've seen before. For once I'd like to see one of his films where a couple actually stay together instead of one (or both) of them having a wandering eye for the what's on the other side of the fence.
