Review of Byzantium (2013) by Soufiane E — 06 Nov 2013
Neil Jordan still has it. He directs another very somber and bloody vampire film, that changes things a bit and keeps the subgenre alive for a little while longer. Two female vampires find refuge in a lonely man's abandoned hotel, and their lifestyles clash through extended back story.
Clara is the mother, a sexy femme fatale who kills the ones who prey on the weak. Her daughter Eleanor is the opposite, raised in a nunnery and only kills her victims through consent and euthanasia. When Eleanor falls in love with a boy and lets out her secret, the ladies' past comes back to haunt them with the mysterious Brotherhood closes in.
At its core, Byzantium is a story about motherhood, and the troubles of raising a daughter. Even vampires seem to have trouble with this aspect of parentage. Not without bloody thrills as well, Byzantium is a Gothic and interesting little fairy tale.
