Review of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) by Jon S — 16 Oct 2009
Can't believe it took me 35 years to finally watch this movie. It was so far removed from what I was expecting I'm not sure what to say about the film itself, although I'd read a reference to how it ends in a magazine so at least that didn't take me by surprise.
I've always loved Paul Newman, but just as with with Pacino when I watched the Godfather for the first time (another classic I sadly didn't watch until my 30's), the revelation for me here was Redford. I've always thought of him more as a director, and pictured him as an older man with the rugged-looking face. I've seen very few of his acting roles, but after watching this film I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to think of Brad Pitt as anything but a Redford knock-off again (and I've always been a fan). The physical resemblance has never seemed quite so striking, but the mannerisms, the expressions that Redford displays here could be superimposed over a handful of different Pitt roles.
