Review of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) by John A — 08 Sep 2011
There is a really good movie buried in here somewhere, but it doesn't want to show itself. While it's often considered a western, and 'technically' it is, it seems so ashamed of its own genre that it constantly tries to break away from any traditional western tropes which makes for a mess of a film.
The story of Butch and Sundance isn't all that interesting, and it will remain a mystery to me why it has become legend; but Newman and Redford have great chemistry, and that leads to some good scenes.
They save the film from mediocrity, and make for a pleasant watch. For the most part.
