Definitely the late 60s were the transitional from the classic western into the modern one with films such as Wild Bunch and this one. Newman and Redford are great as the inseparable pair of thieves and play their parts very well in a true story about the infamous gang in the old west.
What gives the film flare are the performances and the style brought about by Goldman's witty writing and Conrad Hall's sensational cinematography. Definitely a "cult" favorite I think that has influenced directors and filmmakers like the Coen Brothers and Tarantino for sure.
Not my favorite western by a long shot but the film has fun in reliving the triumphs of these two outlaws and their drive to the end.
