Review of But I'm a Cheerleader (2000) by Jose M — 14 Mar 2012
I have had hatred towards cheerleaders in the big screen ever since the Bring it on films, but they always use the excuse but Iâ(TM)m a Cheerleader to get out of their situation. However, the title suggest something more complex as it deals with the character Megan buying into a gender stereotyped which is one of the themes that are highlighted in this funny film.
At first, I thought this film was going to be a near disaster, but I managed to settle down and enjoy it. Most of the characters are half ***backwards as they try to âcureâ? homosexuality even though they are the cure! Sorry, I was watching X-Men the Last Stand.
It is too silly to be taken seriously as we get obnoxious behavior and all kinds of phallic references, but it manages to be pretty sweet and warming if you are not biased or homophobic. The film is primarily focusing on growing awareness and coming of age and Ru Paul without drags.
