Review of Burnt Offerings (1976) by Jacob F — 25 Oct 2010
A surprisingly bleak film with some interesting but undeveloped ideas makes this cinematic precursor to The Shining a bit difficult to sit through, and not in a good way. Dan Curtis is probably best known for some stellar TV work, so it makes sense that this feels like a TV movie.
It's far too long and like a lot of the horror novel adaptations of the time (The Other, The Sentinel) it's a bit stuffy. Even Bette Davis can't give this film the jolt it needs, nor can Oliver Reed's overacting.
However, The score is creepy and you have to love the hearse driver.
