Review of Burlesque (2010) by Sol C — 30 Sep 2011
The film was so so. It needed a major rewrite. Some scenes and some of the dialog was terrible. The tone of the film was off. It kind of reminded me of movies like Moulin Rouge, Chicago, and Showgirls. The songs and music numbers were good though. I think had the film be directed by Rob Marshall, Baz Luhrman, or Kenny Ortega and it would have been a much better film.
Acting wise, Christina Aguilera was ok, but not great. I could see her doing better in other acting roles in other films than this one. I didn't think that she had a good on screen chemistry with Cam Gigandet. I was expecting more of Alan Cumming in a film like this. On the positive, Cher shines in this film. So does Stanley Tucci. The both of them steal the film and make it worth watching. Kristen Bell was good as Christina's rival. She kind of reminded me of Gina Gershon in Showgirl.
The film is worth checking out for the songs and performances by Cher and Stanley Tucci.
