Review of Burlesque (2009) by Jes B — 06 Jul 2011
How could they take something as sexy and entertaining as Burlesque and turn it into something so flat and boring? I think my biggest gripe is that Aguilera's voice, whilst good just isn't what you'd expect to hear in a club, and it comes across more dubbed than live.
This was undoubtedly foremost a vehicle for Aguilera and Cher to showcase their voices (good) and acting (dire). The plot was merely an afterthought and I found my self several times looking at how many minutes were left.
One of my favorite films ever was The Fabulous Baker Boys where Michelle Pfeiffer was so believable both on stage and off. She was sultry, sexy and the chemistry she built up with the piano player was superb.
Here the lead came across as a pain in the ass. They should have focused more on her struggle to get to LA, made it tougher for her to get her first break, and should have saved her break through appearance to the end of the film rather than half way.
Seeing Aguilera on X factor earlier in the year, I have to say the thing I was most astonished at was how thin she was in this film compared to now. She must have really hit the pies after ready some of the reviews!
