Review of Buried (2010) by Jonathan B — 23 Mar 2012
Unlike, 127 Hours (released only a few months after) Buried stays solely in the small wooden box buried beneath the ground from the beginning to the end. The amount of tension and edge of the seat terror you feel while watching is something to behold. The opening scene of the main character waking up to find he's buried alive sets up some really nerve-wrecking claustrophobia and that horrible feeling of unease is throughout. Ryan Reynolds's performance is really good, you feel as if you may be watching a master actor at work. The films twists and turns in unexpected ways, keeps new ways of bringing in new tension and has an end that is not only incredibly poignant, but feels absolutely perfect.
The 'films set solely in one place' genre has been done a few times to varying degrees of success. A lot have turned out to be pretty good (127 Hours, Phonebooth and Lebanon). I think Buried is the best yet and proof that a movie doesn't need a budget or dramatic set-pieces to be one of the most thrilling films ever.
If you remember the horror you felt during the final moments of Spoorloos? Buried is that for an hour and 30 minuets. One of the most impressive horror films I've seen for years.
