I held my breath through the whole movie. While it is quite possible to save yourself from being buried alive, especially in his situation, I understand the panic he was in and not having a way to 'google' such a thing prevented the character from knowing how.

I was under the impression that the whole thing would wind up being some crazy psychological test being done on him but it was a real as the sand covering him. The ending will have you holding your breath and panicking.
