Review of Burden of Dreams (1982) by Tom G — 14 Jul 2008
Great documentary on the making of Werner Herzog's 'Fitzcarraldo' that at the end of the day is probably as compelling as the film itself. The fact that the film got finished at all remains a miracle - this may even have the edge on 'Apocalypse Now' in terms of insanely ambitious film-making in defiace of nature.
And the crazy thing is is that not all the story is told here - Kinski was a complete nightmare to work with on the set and the natives even offered Herzog their services should he want the actor killed - which tells you something about their feelings towards the guy (but of course, he is brilliant in the film).
Superb.
