Review of Bunraku (2010) by Saralynne E — 04 Jan 2012
I started out wanting to see this movie just for the sake of Gackt, because I am a HUGE fan of his. I know that this movie has received many negative reviews to date, but honestly, the movie is not all that bad. Sure there were things that could have been done better, but that is the case with any movie. I view this movie as a return to a more simplistic type of movie making....less special effects and more people. I can appreciate that in a world where more and more special effects have become just...too over the top. Of course they are cool....I mean who doesn't like big explosions...but seriously...not realistic. I digress.
Anyway, the acting was spot on for the comic book/anime feel, and the movie played out almost like a video game. (Obviously there were some clear elements that played on video game themes.) I thought the sets were reminiscent of old school musicals, especially with the light changes, it added an interesting flair to the movie. Definitely not a movie for hardline mainstream folks, but those that enjoy a more eclectic selection would probably like this movie. Overall, I loved it because it was different. That and as a fangirl I love seeing Gackt's pretty face. :).
