Review of Bunraku (2010) by Tiffany Y — 15 May 2012
I Absolutely loved this move!! I do have to say that it is not the type of movie that every one would like. (As is obvious by the ratings) "Bunraku" is a type of Japanese puppet theatre and the visuals and set imitate the theatre feel.
Considering the title it also explains the style of story telling used. I loved the dystopian meets western meets Asian feel it has and especially the propaganda poster style design in some of the scenes.
The cast is excellent as well. The story doesn't seem that good at first. It seems thin and poorly done. You can't watch it just once to appreciate it. You need to watch it once to get accustomed to the styles ( a lot is poured into one movie!) then once more to get the story.
There are plenty of un answered questions but I wonder if they had hoped to make another movie to go along with it or if it was better explained in the story they originally got it from. This movie isn't for every one, but don't decide not to watch it just based on the sad reviews of every one else.
You should watch it all the way through at least once, if only for Gackt and Harrelson. If you fall into the right group of audience you will be nerding out. Also loved the fact that there was a gunless cowboy, a swordless samurai, and a horseless horseman.
There are a lot of themes in it to (Ok so maybe they did try to pack in a lot) but like I said before you have to watch it more than once.
