Review of Bumblebee (2018) by N C — 26 Dec 2018
4/5.
It's already showing in some cinemas here, but RT won't let me give it a rating yet, so when I can and I can remember I will change it officially.
Apart from a couple of pacing issues the film is great, and is vastly superior to the Michael Bay films, and it gives little nods to both the newer films and the older original franchise.
What the film excels at are the G1 looking live action transformers, combined with action that is not hard to keep track of. I knew every transformer (both Autobots and Decepticons) at a glance and there was no confusion about what what was happening during the action, which the Michael Bay films always seemed to have messed up.
The Cybertron scenes were breathtaking in both the nostalgia and their adaptation. The human story lines was clear and enjoyable and meshed well with the Transformer story, which coupled with the 80's nostalgia nods was a delight.
This is the live action version of Transformers the fans have been asking for.
