Review of Bumblebee (2018) by Tom W — 20 Dec 2018
Loved it. There are imperfect moments like any movie, but the film's plot is great for scriptwriting, meaning they weaken a giant war machine enough to give him the E.T. adorable infant treatment - which really lands and is fun to get behind.
This movie does everything Michael Bay's crappy movies never took the time to do. This film actually slows down its storytelling long enough for two characters to have a moment. It takes the time to simply explain why Bumblebee is the way he is.
It slows down the action and simplifies the character designs enough so you can tell the robot has a face and a head, and doesn't just look like a turd dipped in shrapnel like Bay's characters.
It makes you happy while simultaneously annoying you about how terrible the previous live-action films were. What a great job by Paramount, finally. Hire a director who understands the nuance of movement and animation and feelings.
Slide the whacko who's snorted too much coke to ever stand still long enough to understand what nuance means. In the end, they're either ignoring Bay's horrid continuity, and starting a reboot.
.. OR they're telling a prequel with plenty of years in between to tell better stories and eventually link the plots up to Bay's films... either way, the last 6 films were 6 of the worst films in history.
If Paramount keeps this up, i'll be there on opening night from now on.
