Review of Bullitt (1968) by Steve D — 28 Jan 2010
Steve McQueen is about as cool as it gets in this understated and tense film that doesn't have enough guns or explosions to be a true action movie, but doesn't have quite enough character development or emotional involvement to be a traditional drama.
That being said, the car chase scene is great and the subtle acting at the end more than compensates for this film coming close to cinematic no-man's land. It felt almost like Alfred Hitchcock was directing his first action film since Bullitt's most interesting scenes are the ones leading up to the action, rather than the action itself.
My only big complaint is that Robert Vaughn's character was made stereotypically evil and slimy without really serving a purpose.
