Review of Bullitt (1968) by Jake A — 06 Jul 2017
With Edgar Wright's Baby Driver being a great film that was also clearly influenced by earlier films and since I couldn't make the BFI special Car Car Land that showed several of those influences I thought I would go through some of them myself with Bullitt being the first.
I have always loved this film and for more than the excellent car chase that was a first in cinema with how it was filmed and how it thrilled. It also has a solid cast with McQueen being the king of cool, it is edited really well, I like the score but I also love that they don't overuse it (the decision to have no score during the car chase for instance was a brilliant move), the rest of the action is good with the violence being way more realistic than you would expect from a police procedural thriller of the time and though the script could be deeper the plot is nonetheless engrossing.
