Review of Bullitt (1968) by John E — 20 Apr 2010
Frank Bullitt is different from the lawmen he helped inspire. He is not smarmy, he isn't particularly likable, and he doesn't exude much other than a cool, rote facade. Unfortunately, he is also the only interesting character in this movie, apart from the senator (even Robert Duvall isn't given anything to do).
The narrative style is based on realism and as such, the narrative gets detailed (sometimes to the point of being muddled) and it can be a little restrained for modern tastes (much like Bullitt's character).
The car chase is exciting even today, but one can see how the thrill of speed was enough for audiences back then cf. complex car chases today. A very different cop movie from its descendants, it is still well worth checking out.
