Review of Bull Durham (1988) by Harry W — 30 Jan 2013
Bull Durham is much more of an american film than anything else, playing into the depth and importance of one of America's favourite pastimes: Baseball.
It isn't as funny as you could have hoped or that all the major critics have made it out to be, and it may be some kind of American humour that foreigners are yet to understand properly, but i'm unsure.
Bull Durham succeeds, however with the proper heart of a sports movie and well executed baseball sequences, as well as an interesting study of relationships.
It's also enhanced by it's charasmatic cast led by Kevin Costner and the always-talented and beautiful Susan Sarandon, and supported by an energetic Tim Robbins in one of his better early roles. The chemistry between Sarandon and Costner is also very powerful and makes them a largely convincing couple.
It also has a fairly rich screenplay and lots of effort from director Ron Shelton.
So Bull Durham is more of a romantic comedy than much else, but it succeeds in that area as well as the Sports side.
