Review of Bugsy (1991) by John S — 17 Oct 2007
It's a disappointment in an area where it should have been the biggest plus. to see the suave warren beatty is to see him in his natural element. he play bugsy as a charming, fun loving guy with corks, but when it comes to warren portraying the angry side of bugsy, it comes off horrible.
it literally made me uncomfortable to see beatty in that scene where he forces that man to bark like a dog and oink like a pig, it's not because this is what the director was trying to do with the audience, it's because beatty came off terrible in the scene.
then there is the scene in which elliot gould is going to take a drive with beatty and he keeps reminding him of how those drives reminded him when he was a child, it comes off sooooo corny because you know exactly where the story is heading and what they're trying to do.
it's bad writing, plain and simple. the one shinning light in this film is annette bening, she comes off charismatic and perfect in her role as a hollywood starlet from new york. their relationship together doesn't really hit an pot holes and comes off as a good point of the film.
the glitsiness of the direction and acting makes the film scream out for oscar recognition but that's where the film goes wrong. films like these should not cater to awards, they shouldn't be about the glitz and clamor, but more about the corruption and how everything looked great on the outside, but was dark in the inside.
this kinda side steps it or goes into the topic gently without really going all out.
